The last day of carnival had arrived... the devil would be buried until next year and the party would end.. we tried to upload the two videos where you can follow all the story of this day, but we are now at Belen, a city at Catamarca where internet is soooooooooooo slow... come back for the videos in one day, we go now to villa Union to see the dinosaurs parks and maybe we 'll be luckier...

meanwhile, some images and words..

we went again to Uquía where we had seen the unbury of it..

people and devils were there, meeting to go to a house where they had been invited...

they walked along the streets, singing all the time.. if you see the clips, you will notice how they kept silence while passing the church.. crazy syncretism culture all along northwest... the religion of the oppressor and the deep believing of their ancestors...

One of the phrases, me voy a ir... i'm gonna leave, made us feel nostalgic even carnival was not yet ending...
the comparsa and followers, crossed the route...
when arriving at the house, clouds of talc and confetti fall on us... there was a band invited there who received all us with music...
we danced many hours... song after song....

but at certain moment, devils began to cry.. the countdown was finishing...
we left the house and we walked again till the "headquarters"of the comparsa, where the music went on but the cries increased..

the devils began leaving the place,, complaining about the next bury...all went to el mojon where they stayed, singing and celebrating, with beer and other beverages...
the songs were saying good bye to carnival..and so were doing our souls...
They climbed the hill, where they had appeared 8 days ago... the last notes were heard, the last voices were missing in the starry night...
When they disappeared, we all went to el mojon, to throw there the confetti, to clean of talc our faces and of "evil actions =)"our souls and just return to the daily life...
but each one of us waiting, wishing for the next carnival to come...

We went to Juella to see the small village and to try to find the so nice musicians we had hear the previous day..

we were lucky, as we found much more than that...
the comparsa was there, invited to a house and we arrived just in time to see them.
it was very special time..the village is small, and there were only the inhabitants, no tourist, just us..

the copleros prepared to sing,,,
some had just nice time and fun...
but a hard rain began..people went inside the house and we were kindly invited to enter with them!
inside, the coplas went on... the friendly feeling pervaded us...and the deep certainty we were sharing something special...
we finally left behind these children , with our soul not only full of carnival spirit, but with the warmness of this incredible land in it...

We went to purmamarca, to make a visit to its market...

We then climbed a hill to may appreciate the beautiful colours of earth here...

a long road, 40 minutes walking, called de los Colorados, with some shadowy stops at its beginning..

and a breathtaking, wonderful view while doing it..

we went back to Tilcara and heard some so typical music, same to previous comparsas but with more flutes... we follow the sound and an elegant devil welcomed us..

it was a comparsa from Juella, a near village from tilcara...(the following day would bring us a surprise when going to visit that village.. ) We follow them, we danced and register...
and we weren't the only ones to enjoy it!

flamingos and rest..

after some festive days we decided to go to Pozuelos lagoon, a national reserve distant about 150 km from Tilcara.. in the road we found some festive guys, too.. =)
the lagoon was impressive, the sky benevolous with clouds to may shoot it
Pozuelos is a nature reserve with thousands of Andean flamingos (Phoenicoparrus andinus). Its habitats are the salt-water lagoons of the Andean altiplano where they build mud nests and eat minuscule crustaceans.

it was rest day with beautiful views, and we prepared for the following day, to make a tiring, nice walk to a special place at Purmamarca...

It was Wednesday ashes so most comparsas were having a rest. We went to visit a small village near Tilcara , named Maimará, “falling star” in aborigin language.
One of the highlights is the cemetery and the impressive background it has... but we couldn't resist to capture this signal...we walked along its streets, with inviting benches... a shadow appeared, but it vanished before we could talk to it ..We later went back to Tilcara and to one of its attractions.. in the road we found these boys, playing beside one Mojon..Pucará is an Inca language Quechua word and its literal translation is "Fortified Place".It is built on top of a hill, which rises about 70 metres above the bed of the Río Grande River, occupying close to 15 hectares.

It was an ideal defensive position, on one-side cliffs overlooking the river, on the other side steep hillsides and on the accessible parts, they built a defensive wall. From this old strategic place there is a wonderful encompassing view over the access to the Gorge.

It's time now to see the carnival by night.. you walk the streets and just have to follow the sound of the music.. they will be playing and dancing all comparsas are invited by night, too, to different houses..
some depart from the square, and others just finish there... tired devils, or just enthusiastic musicians …
Some houses prepare big recipients full of beverage, wine with orange juice and we were gently invited by these devils to take one and drink it till the end! (previously we had to allow them cover our face and hair with talc, artificial snow and no, we will not publish those images! =)

We went to see how were the comparsas doing at Purmamarca, a beautiful small village at la Quebrada de Humahuaca, near Tilcara.. its name means "village in virgin land" and it is famous because of the mountain of the seven colours..
We entered the village but we saw nothing carnival's special except some festive parrots..
but when leaving we found a house were one of the comparsas was invited.. during all these days these groups will go to homes that invite and homage them...
copleros... dances.. talc and artificial snow.. some old ladies drinking "saratoga", what seems orange juice but it is has veeery much alcoholic degrees...the feast was there too, and we summed to them!

On Saturday later, we went to Uquia, to the mojon near the cemetery, where the band had begun to play
we waited, knowing that the comparsa would come down the hill, but we didnt expect the amazing view we would see!

Devils began to appear , fireworks to explode and hundred of lights multiplied by the mirror the dresses had... devils use mirrors to reflect and to reject the negative energies that they can suffer like all human being.
And they wear masks because it is considered there is no social class in carnival, that is why also they play and whiten with talc, to erase who they are in these days of carnival, and thus to be able to enjoy equal to equal..

The devils came down and mixed with people, one took the devil buried and showed to the rest, who spreader beer, wine, talc and foam to celebrate the carnival beginning...

We began Saturday deciding to go to Uquia, a small city near Tilcara, around 5 pm, where they would un-bury the carnival. But when we went to the main square at Tilcara at noon, we saw some musicians, from one comparsa. the town has several comparsas and each has its own site to un-bury the Carnival. These musician were prepared to go to the mojon, a pile of stones where the devil was buried They began playing and walking and we went after them..

once arrived at el mojon, they watered the Earth and the pile with beer and wine, they threw leaves of coca and ignited cigarettes. It was decorated with serpentines, garlands, wool, flowers, basil, etc. The maize plant offered like symbol of fertility of the Earth.

Sudenly a young boy and an old lady came near the mojon, and dig up of the pile the doll representing the devil, The Diablito or Pu Jillay: symbol of the carnival, who brings joy and good luck. The band got crazy playing and so did the people (and us).

After being bathed in water, beer, talc and others (and our cameras trying to survive) we left that special un bury to go to another even more fantastic...
but this , we will show you tomorrow..

unexpected feast..

We had decided to use Friday before carnival to explore La quebrada and find the schedule for Saturday at all villages. We went to Uquia, a small village 30 km from Tilcara, as we knew the best unburied of carnival would be there.
Although, we found such surprise...
At the village, at very time we arrive, it was begining a feast.. fiesta de la chicha y la copla!
(Chicha is a beverage with aborigines origins that can be made of corn or peanuts, fermented..)
When we entered, we found many copleras and copleros, (see our previous post ) waiting to sing.. They had come from different villages of Jujuy and also from different provinces...

There were some playing erquencho, that instrument made with a horn..
Others only with their voices and their caja, that round little drum that they hang in one wrist and play..
you will see most of them have bunches of basil, that is the symbol of the carnival...

Saturday was the unbury of carnival at Uquía.. devils, dust, music and breathtaking feast.. Sunday we will post part of it!

We have begun our trip to carnival at northwest.We will live from within, along with the locals, one of the most important, the real, traditional festival of the Northwest Argentina. An Andean celebration, full of native root’s rituals and ceremonies. The devil is the figure that represents Carnival. It enables people to get rid of their negative aspects that were repressed during the year.
We decided to arrive one day earlier to may capture a special event. On Thursday before Saturday of carnival takes place Thursday godmothers (jueves de comadres), the day dedicated to women who meet in different places like the Square, the market, where they wish a good carnival, they invite drinks, food, but more important are the songs (coplas) they share. They sing all afternoon, they form circles and dance and they throw people and themselves talc and wear garland of flowers and colourful papers
Before going to see these comadres we found some members of one of the groups that will be present when carnival be unburied next Saturday..

Although, not all public was happy with the loud music..
We then went to the main square at Tilcara where comadres were ready...

Coplas are simple phrases, singed from the heart to express sorrows, love.. to just describe life in all aspects.. voices go direct as an arrow to the heart of the spectator, even not knowing what words mean....

Punta Tombo and penguins

Each year, at September, thousands penguins arrive at punta Tombo coasts to find a place for a nest and wait for females to come...

they swim for days, and with the last rest of strength they finally reach the beach...

but not all is easy.. =) some have to fight to get what they want....

there are others inhabitants there and they just get as much fun as we watching the noisy penguins..

the Patagonia trip is over now... and the blog will stop for the moment... thank you so much for following it and for the great reactions we got through mails!

a far noise maybe, and they flew away...

we went to El Chalten, a small village, paradise for trekking lovers and with a plus, the mythical mountain Fitz Roy,

clouds offered a so singular view of it!

we made the trekking to salto del Chorillo...a beautiful small cascade was there

we went on to the Lago del desierto, but we had to come back before reaching it!

before leaving, tired and happy, we found this very particular crocotrunk, who was there, tanning under the sun! =)

there is a road to make at San Julian, called paseo costero.. we saw there the rests of an old meat factory..

the coasts of the Atlantic ocean, reflecting the sky, the wind whistling..

a beach where shells shone under the warm sun falling, with shiny water drops, thousand times multiplied..

a mighty sky, enhancing the deep sense of solitude... immensity... silence...

We were ready to left to Puerto San Julian.. but a storm appeared and it began snowing softly..

It became harder and the road was not that easy to follow!

but we finally arrived and a warm sun made all shine in beauty..

we went to the beach, to capture the last sun-rays,,

there we found some surprises... this jellyfish among stones and the wonderful sea plant...

the following day we would explore more the coats there, at San Julian.. and we would find more wonders..

stoney woods

At Sarmiento, 30 km far, is one of the two petrified woods we were going to visit
They are called "wood", because their trees weren`t dragged along by rivers or glaciers, as it happened at other places in the world.. so, they have unique characteristics.

At the beginning of the Tertiary Era , the Andes Range arose and thus, prevented the Pacific ocean`s humidity from passing, producing eruptions. The ash and lava`s deposits spread allowing a slow process of transformation of these trunks into stone..

it is hard to imagine that this arid place was a fertile region, with woods and lagoons, inhabited by a varied fauna, which rests were found fossilized, as well.
but not also the woods were impressive.. landscapes there are breathtaking!

A day at Peninsula Valdes, with a boat trip to may capture these fantastic whales.. Southern Right Whales(Eubalaena australis)...
they arrive at this place to mate and breed their young...

but there were also other kind of guys swimming and having fun in this waters =)

Buenos Aires feelings... and more

Buenos Aires, the cafe Tortoni and some of greatest Argentine culture icons gave us some best moments...

the 34 degrees, gave us not so good ones! ufff =)

but the sunset of our frist day travelling to patagonia, was sooooo wonderful!!

we arrived at Puerto Pirámide, a small village in Peninsula Valdes... at-4C!
the beautiful landscapes were just an appetizer to the following day, shooting whales!

We had to leave our car at Belen to be repaired... (deep sigh)

We rented a car and went to shoot the beautiful biosphere reservoir of Laguna Blanca and flamingos there.

We returned to Buenos Aires by bus and tomorrow , we leave again, now to Patagonia, so we will be probably not online for a couple of days...

but in next posts, we will start showing Patagonia in the famous and the unknown way

Our friends took us to Antofagasta de la Sierra, where we found a man with a van who would pull our car back to the city. 65 km far at an altitude of 4500 m, and t wasnt that fast job.
The impressive starry night was there, among all stops we had to do becuase the rope this man had was a disaster... twinkling stars to bright our spirit..

finally, we got back to the village, where a mechanic tried to repair it...
He didnt succeed!
Then, an unexpected solution appeared...
the car would be taken inside a truck to a near city, Belen...

meanwhile, we shot some beautiful volcanic landscapes in the nearbies...

The houses were Antofalla village and we found refugee from the storm until the following day.
We found there another car, with Analia and Maxi that needed to stop. We both gave gas oil to the generator of the village............ so that night the 30 inhabitants, our new friends and us , had three hours of electricity

The following day, we departed to Antofagasta de la sierra, following an impressive road

but after making some shots, our friends who were coming with us, noticed a spot of oil at the ground...
the car was broken...

Our last day at Tolar grande began with beautiful light and clouds at the sky...

we shot shapes and lines and with certain melancholy, we left that village.. we had found there not only wonderfull landscapes but also warm souls...

we crossed the Arizaro salt flat, with 1,500 km2 the largest of the Argentine Puna, to go to see the Cono of Arita...

the pastel tones and the huge Salar gave such sense of immensity...

But the wind had begun... and even being almost noon, this was the last photo of the day..
we would get lost, not seeing the road... the GPS showed no tracks and the vision was null...
all of a sudden, when trying to find out what to do, we saw, among the dust , some far houses...

That day, we decided to go to see the Laguna de Santa Maria, about 65 km far from Tolar Grande. a guide from the village, Francisco, accompanied us...

Impressive views and yellowy grass, like flowers, appeared along the two hours needed to reach the lagoon.... we were said it was inhabited by flamingos..

The wind almost didnt allow to get out of the car.....we found only two, with frozen feathers, lying on the lake... some minutes after we shot them, they could hardly walk and then disappeared....

Not possible to shoot much more in the coming back.. cold weather and the wind was getting stronger.. (well, we would really know how a strong wind is, the following day)
but the sun light falling on the mountains, warmed our soul...

PachaMama

we were so lucky!.. that very night, there was a feast, even not the proper day, to offer the Pacha mama, the mother earth...and we were so kindly invited to assist!

the feast began with some words and announcing that the offrends of the previous year,would be unburied and new ones were there to renew the cycle... a hole was made at the right place

we began offrending coca leaves, wine, cigarettes to Pacha mama, throwing them to the hole , and also trying them.... invoking and adding some words, asking mother earth to be benevolent and care about us... ( it would become so real for us some days later!)
young and old, all people celebrated with much passion. faith and warmness... simple wishes from the bottom of their hearts and ours...

the festivity ended buring all, and asking for the good being of all, with the words of the cacique don Julio Cruz ( the community boss).

we arrived at Tolar Grande, a beautiful village in the middle of the Puna.. sand dunes and multicoloured shapes, in pastel tones ...
near the village some amazing minimal lakes of salty water, ojos del mar (sea's eyes) among salines of white and red textures...
we found a group of biologists trying to dive in these eyes, searching for alive bacteries in fossiles, but the salinity didnt allow them to go deeper (locals said it had been Pachamama, forbidding them )
the sun was falling and the tones enhanced their beauty..

but the main beauty of the day was about to come.. deep feelings and the spirit of the people in it.. later, Pachamama feast..

we spent the night at San Antonio de los Cobres and got ready to go on to one of our highlights in the trip... the small village of Tolar Grande...

we crossed this kind of landscapes, with so subtles tones of soil and such soft lines in shapes

red earth to lead our road and also to find it mixed with salt at some salines we crossed through..

this couple was having much fun, rolling in the dust.. (dust we would see more in following days! )

After some days without internet, here we are... we will post now our day from Tilcara to San Antonio de los Cobres, but after that, many things happened..
We participated at a Pachamama feast...we were at remote villages, far from each other not less than 150 km... open heart people , not all day with electricity and so cold weather conditions..
We passed the two last days lost at the Puna, one of the most beautiful and extreme regions of Argentina...
Pachamama, mother earth, was benigne with us, and in the middle of terrible stormwinds, by chance we saw some houses far away; we managed to reach them and saved ourselves of passing the night at the car , – 20 degrees without suitable clothing.
So, more to come..

After passing many rivers that crossed the soooo stoney road, we arrived at Iruya, this beautiful village... (ufff with the wires, yes)..
A place where the time stopped, even not knowing for how much more...

along that road we found many interesting guys.. =).. here a beautiful fox, who stopped for a moment to watch us

and two more, so typical at this side of the world: the mighty condor, who was flying over the village and a beautiful lama....

we continue the following day exploring Humahuaca gorge.. coloured hills, cultivated fields...
the place where nature and man melt in harmony and beauty..

Where history appears at every step, as in this image, a place where one of Argentina's Independence heroes, watched to see, at far distance, how the enemy avanced at beginning of XVII century...

The melt of men and nature.. and the dream of new generations, to keep the soul of these essential feelings...

We left Salta and drove to a place that was designed by UNESCO as Humanity Heritage, Humahuaca Gorge..
One of the villages in it, is Tilcara..

There, we went to capture the big fortress, called Pucara, used by aborigines to defend from the invaders...

Stones, cactus.. reconstructed houses and ceremonial places, all surrounded by an impressive view of the valleys ..
It was a so windy day, cold.. but a little cutie came to warm our souls...

it had not been easy.. we arrived at Salta city, in the middle of a traffic jam and bad mooded people.. better to wait till later, where the nervous ones would be sleeping...

But at the cabildo, two couple of souls were enjoying the starry night. so, it was good to go on walking...
At the multicolour church, the lonely street echoes our steps...
we shot it and left..
but when seeing our images at the screen, we saw him...
maybe a shadow , only, in the silence of the night..

We left Cachi but first we walked around, to capture its soul... in the streets, at the main square...
the route lead us to these layers and colours...and houses.

At the National Park Los Cardones, thousands of cactus attracted us, so we stopped but then, a lovely pair appeared..
After a while, this breathtaking view at 3348 m asl , at Piedra del molino, prepared us for the long descendant road to reach our new destination.. Salta city

We had to leave Cafayate , to reach our next destiny, Cachi.. the vineyards said good bye, while the milestone remembered us we were driving along the famous route 40, with more than 5000 km length, from south to north...

the river Calchaquí, the one with the name of the bravest primitive owners of the land, appeared suddenly.. how not to shoot it!
the rich colours... the black, deep black mountain... the landscape was changing...
a turn of the road and the Arrows ravine began... as emerging from the ground in thousand and one peaks...

a hard , beautiful road was finishing... a lonely soul, in dust and light, was riding it

We finally arrived at Cafayate, a village among hills , with the sandy soil to produce best wines...
the fresh, pure air and the heart opened people there...

the river accompanied us some part of our driving to a multicoloured ravine, 50 km far from the city
shapes and lines, sunny feeling and beauty....
when we were coming back to Cafayate, the last light designed these figures, in the distance..

From Amaicha del Valle, a short way left us to Los Quilmes fortress, the place where for about 150 years, brave aborigines defied the conquerors and rebelled!
Silent witnesses, the cactus whispered us some stories..

Other souls were there, as well...
We followed our trip.... next destiny would be a beautiful city, Cafayate. where you can try the most tasty, great wines in Argentina, .. sandy soil, great climate..
The landscape before arriving was somehting like this one..

pure beauty...

The new day brought a breathtaking view of the lake and mountains, pastel colours pervaded by beauty.. and silence

We also tried to feel the spirit of the place... nature at its best but the voices of the past, of the original innhabitants...

Their souls still exist in those of the people living here.
Tafí del Valle is famous for its cheese.. and when going to buy some at this place, part of that spirit pervaded us

At the end of the second day of our departure, the plain land was beging to change, the cultivated fields began to become arid... then some hills suddenly appeared and the incredible green of the rainforest of Las Yungas irrupted...
Curves and swinging road that diminished while we got closer to our destination.. Tafí del Valle

Before departing to our trip, we decided to go to La boca, the quarter of the tango.. the place where immigrants arrived a century ago,..where they lived and loved ,in joy and sorrows, so deep as the intense colours of the place.
